 RAMADAN KAREEM

 The holy month, which is the month  of Ramadan has come and every Muslim is expected to know the virtues of the month of Ramadan and behave holy, according to the way Allah wants it.

            Fasting in the month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam, which Allah made obligatory on Muslim in the second year of the prophet’s Migration (Hijrah) to Madinah with the statement “O you who believe fasting is prescribed for those before you so that you may gain Taqua (Piety)” (2:183)

            The messenger of Allah (peace upon him) said “He who fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven”

             The Amir of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism Adulhakeem Adeoye thereby urged all Muslims to fast with faith and not to fast just because they have to.

The buttressed further that Muslims should abstain from whatever that can make their fasting unacceptable.

             With a view to the Ramadan month beer parlours, canteen, club house complained that they loose more customers. The question is that “is it Muslim alone that patronize them?” No. but, the fact remains that after the Ramadan fasting, the beer parlours, canteen, club houses will be filled up.

            Alfa   Adeoye advised all Muslims that so for they were able to do without drinking of alcoholic drinks and committing sins throughout the 30 days  of fasting they should stop all their immoral acts, so that they can receive reward from the  God Allah.

 

             Perhaps this Ramadan may be your last, and you do not live until the next Ramadan. So ask Allah to make you a  better Muslim to bless you and your Muslim brothers and sisters around the world with his numerable blessings and bounties both in this life and in the hereafter.

             The joy of Eid (Islamic celebration) and the following months until the next purpose of Ramadan, namely, to gain Taqwa (piety or God’s consciousness).

            The real test of success in Ramadan is whether  or not one carries on the good deeds he did during Ramadan throughout the rest of the year.

FIRST SEMEESTER EXAM RESLTS RELEASED

            The long awaited students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism couldn’t hold their breath as they ran out from their classes when they learnt that the expected first semester exam results was about to be pasted on the notice board.

            Students that were eager to see their results had lamented earlier that, it took a long time for the results to be released, buttressing that, the exam was held in March and the results were not released till August which is few weeks to the second semester exam.

            The eagerness to see the results by some students died down, as they stayed in the corridor looking at others that were checking their results.

            Some were filled with joy as they cannot betray their emotions because of their good results, while some were sober.

            The fact remains that some will be impressed about their result and decide to do better in the forthcoming exam. While some may feel bad about their result and filled with deep thought to the extent of loosing concentration on the forthcoming examination.

            However,  the first semester exam had come and gone, it is now left with the second semester exam which is less than two weeks.

NIJ STUDENTS' WEEK

NIJ STUDENTS” WEEK

            The news of the acceptance of the students’ week to take off by the school management brought joy to yhe hearts of the student of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.

            The happiness in the hearts of the students knows no bound, as the students’ week was the first ever social activity that took place in the institution.

            Monday 18th- 24th of July which was scheduled for the students’ week was lecture free, and it gained the presence of many students.

            The students’ week started with a religious programme on Monday, thereby committing the entire programme into the hands of the creator. The Christian students started with the praise concert in the Institution’s main auditorium, while the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria in the institution engaged themselves in a seminar.

            Social activities alone were not allowed to fill the  hearts of the students as debates were organized. Students were selected from each class to represent their class for the debates. Whereas, the competition among the classes made the debate interesting.

            The provost of the Institution, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Nkem opened the exhibition room. Thereby, giving room for the exhibition of artistic works, pictures, and adverts.

            Students were made to enjoy the rest of their day with the playing of indoor games like: Ludo game, Card game, Scrabble, Drafts, Chess among others. Infact, a marginal line was drawn between the novice and the experts.

            The second day of the students’ week in NIJ started with a debate among the students. The debate titled: Freedom of Information Act: will it enhance civic participation or deepens investigative Journalism? was properly discussed by the debaters, to the extent of finding it difficult to figure out the winner. But the fact is that in every competition there will be a winner and there will be a looser. The representative of the ND2 class emerged as the winner.

            The second day was the cultural day, whereby, students and lecturers were dressed in their cultural attire. Each class represents a particular ethnic group, in which they presented some activities for the ethnic group they were representing.

            The presence of the Former Governor of Lagos State, chief Lateef Jakande, the chairman of Igbos in Lagos State and some important personalities graced the occasion of the cultural day.

            Students’ can forget all about education or their academics when it comes to social activities. To avoid this, the third day of the students’ week which was Wednesday was the academic segment of the programme.

            On this day, Mrs. Abike Dabiri Erewa was present to educate the students on the function of the Freedom of Information Act, and how it can be well used by the members of the society.

            The football match between the Students and the Lecturers really made the day wonderful, as the lecturers defeat the students with 4-0 points. This was surprising, as majority believed that the students would won the game.

            Students were made to remember their secondary school days on the fourth day of the event, as they were dressed like they were in secondary school. Lined up on an assembly according to their heights, different classes, boys separate, and ladies separate. The students matched from the assembly ground to their various classes.

            Few hours later, the dressing of the students changed from their school uniform to crag as they left the school compound to beg for money.

            The grand finale of the event took place on Friday with exquisite dresses on both ladies and guys. Beauty pageant was conducted and Miss Grace Nora emerged as Miss NIJ and Mr. Patric emerged as Mr. NIJ. Students that are well dressed and well behaved were awarded marvelous gifts.

            The students’ week in the mind of the students of NIJ was meant not to come to an end as they were hoping for more and more of it.

            With this, the clamour for social activity to take place in the school as come to an end because the activity has taken place and it will continue to take place.

		REHABILITATION OF THE ROAD OF ABEOKUTA'S STREET The residents of Abeokuta street, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos has appealed to the Lagos State government, to monitor the re- construction of the street’s road, so that the project will be concluded within a limited time.           The people appealed to the State government because they felt that the re- habilitation of the road has taken much time than expected.           According to one of the residents, who is also a tailor, Mr. Oluwatunbosun Femi said that the re-construction started around early March. He said further that, it has been affecting the mobility of people and vehicles. This is because the gravel that is being used for the re-construction of the road is on the main road, thereby hindering people of free movement within the area.           He said further that, the soil that were dug from the ground is affecting the residents and market people because whenever it is raining, the sand will be washed from the main road to the shop or house in front of it.           A man whose daily business is to sell water, (he pleaded anonymity) appreciated the effort of the state government for counting the street’s road worthy of re-construction. He made it known that the ever since the reconstruction of the road had started, he has been loosing customers, especially the ‘abokis’ who found it difficult to pass with their truck.           Drivers have also complained about the re-habilitation as they found it difficult to drive into the street because of the drainage that was constructed at the entrance of the street.           The road which is meant to be completed within 6 months by the labourers (who said that they are not working for a construction company but it is ‘direct labour’), because it as passed 3months and road still needs more time for it to be re-constructed.           The Lagos state Government and the workers are meant to check whatever may be causing the delay in the re-construction of the road, so as to stop discomforting the residents of the area. #
